Travel insurance if you have – or have had – cancer

(subject to a telephone medical screening).

    • Once you’ve completed any treatment you might have needed, you may feel that you’d like to get away for a break.
    • The fact that you’re looking at this web site means that you have already considered that you might need more specialist travel insurance.
    • You’re correct – it is very important that you have proper cover.

We receive referrals from hospitals, GPs, clinics and medical charities from all over the UK.

What are the travel insurance implications if I have cancer?

A history of cancer will be regarded as what’s called a pre-existing medical condition. In other words, it existed at the time of taking out travel insurance. Most ‘ordinary’ travel insurance is simply not designed to include cover for medical conditions, which could expose you to serious financial risk. This is why it’s so important to obtain a specialist travel insurance policy that includes cover for anything related to cancer.

Below are examples of situations when our policy would cover you, provided you have declared your medical condition to us and we have agreed that we can include it in our cover:

Cancellation: If you become ill and were unable to even begin your trip, claims to recoup your costs such as air fares and accommodation will be met.

Medical expenses: We will meet the costs of doctors’ consultations, medical procedures and medication. This includes situations directly or indirectly linked to any medical conditions you’ve declared to us and that we’ve confirmed we’ll cover.

Curtailment: If you need to be repatriated to the UK for medical reasons, we will pay for the additional travel costs. This could include you being accompanied by a nurse or doctor or even an air ambulance.

If you become ill towards the end of your holiday and are unable to travel back on the date you’d arranged, you will need to arrange new return travel. You might need to book further accommodation until you’re ready to return home.

You can go through the medical screening process online or over the phone.

We will ask you some questions and take into account the nature of the cancer:

    • what treatment you have received
    • what kind
    • whether it’s finished (and, if so, how long ago)
    • whether you’re travelling within Europe or further afield.

We will then be able to tell you if we can provide cover for you and, if so, what the premium would be.

We can’t always offer cover – it will depend on your individual circumstances.

But we hope we can.

Even if we can’t at the moment, it may be that we will be able to in the future.

If someone is travelling with you

It’s important that anyone travelling with you is covered by the same policy as you.

This means that if they need to make a claim even if it was linked to your cancer, it would be met (provided we’ve agreed to cover you). An ‘ordinary’ travel insurance might decline their claim on the same grounds as they might decline a claim made by you.

In our opinion, it’s simply not worth booking your trip without obtaining specialist travel insurance that includes cover for cancer.
